Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an evidence-based training program providing 7.5 contact hours and a 3-year national certification. The training requires about 1.5 hours of self-paced online work and 6 hours of live, instructor-led training, which provides skills to recognize and respond to someone who is experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge/crisis and connect to appropriate resources for additional care. This training is meant to be like standard First Aid or CPR, but for mental health. The MHFA live sessions are available virtually via zoom or in-person at the UNC School of Social Work as a single full-day session or as two half-day sessions. You can also request a training for a group of 15 or more.
