A Healthy LWOC

Happy last week of classes. Reaching this point in the semester is a real accomplishment. Take a moment to recognize the work you have put in. You made it.
The end of the semester can feel intense with finals, deadlines, and the holidays all happening at once. As exams approach, having a plan can make a huge difference. Here are strategies gathered from the Learning Center and Healthy Heels to help you study effectively and take care of yourself.
Identify What to Study
- Review lecture notes, textbooks, slides, and old exams to see what is most likely to be covered.
- Prioritize topics based on how familiar you are with them and how important they are for the final.
- Use a simple ranking system to sort your understanding:
- I do not know this yet
- I somewhat know it
- I know this well
Create a Finals Study Plan
- Estimate how many hours each class needs and schedule that time.
- Use planners, digital calendars, or checklists to map out what you will study and when.
- Start with the topics that need the most attention and work on a plan to move them up your ranking.
- Add breaks, meals, movement, and small rewards. These help with motivation and prevent burnout.
Study How You Study Best
- Build a routine that includes active learning, regular breaks, and self-care.
- Try the Pomodoro method: work for 25 minutes, take a 5 minute break.
- Use outdoor breaks or short walks to reset your focus and boost your mood.
Use Active Learning Strategies
- Teach the material to someone else.
- Solve problems from memory.
- Create concept maps to connect ideas.
- Write and answer your own practice questions.
- Study with classmates in person or on Zoom.
- Re-take old quizzes or practice exams to measure progress.
Take Care of Yourself
- Change your environment when you need a mental reset. Go outside, take a walk, or visit the gym.
- If you do not have a meal plan, try meal prepping so you have ready-to-go food.
- Aim for eight hours of sleep each night. Rest improves focus, memory, and productivity.
- Listen to your body. If you feel yourself getting overwhelmed, take a break and come back in about thirty minutes.
Support Each Other
- Use study groups, peer teaching, and shared resources to help each other review and stay motivated.
- Offer help when you can, such as proofreading, sharing notes, or explaining concepts.
- Celebrate each other's successes and try to keep a positive mindset. Even doing daily activities together, like cooking or exercise, can help reduce stress.
